Apr. 14, 2008: Sweet memories
|
I ate so much candy as a kid I practically go into diabetic shock just thinking about it! I got to reminiscing about the candy counter of my youth after I saw Smarties for sale at a store the other day...
The tiny roll of sugary tablets (no longer a penny, by the way), sent my mind off on one sweet tangent. The neighborhood where I grew up was home to a few small mom and pop grocery stores..and the one called Ray and Gen's was just a couple of blocks away, and conveniently located right across the street from my elementary school.
As you entered the small store with old fashioned wood floors and big ceiling fans twirling above, the first thing you saw was a giant candy counter, just filled with delicious options. You had to ask the clerk to get the items for you and he'd give you the price without having to ring them all out on the cash register, and then hand over the bag of sugary goodness.
There were so many interesting options. Spree, Razzles, Chuckles, those little dots that would stick to the paper, Kits (small square chewy things), candy necklaces that would turn your neck nice pastel colors, Snaps, Sugar Babies, Charms suckers, candy cigarettes, Bottle Caps, Zotz, Six-lets, Lick-em Ade Fun Dip....ooh am I making your teeth hurt yet?
Some other candy bars that (I think) no longer exist: Mars Bars with whole almonds (not just little cut up slivers), Marathon bars, Seven Up (this was like seven different candy bars connected together..a different flavor for each bite!), Milk Shake (the more price friendly alternative to the Milky Way, but in my mind tastier), and Zero.
I bet you can still find a lot of that stuff on retro candy websites or expensive gift shops, but it will never be the same as walking into that neighborhood store with 25 cents and walking out with a bag stuffed with treats...and then sitting on the swings or the monkey bars with my friends who were devouring their own personal "cavities-in-a-bag." |
