Apr. 9, 2008 So Bob Dylan wins a Pulitzer
|
|
I think it's pretty cool that Bob Dylan has won a Pulitzer prize, because it's the first time the snooty judges have looked past their noses to see something other than jazz or classical music as something worth honoring. But I'm not sure the judges looked at everything Dylan's written...
The Pulitzer is a writing prize, given out to journalists, and writers of important works of fiction as well as non-fiction. In awarding the honorary prize to Dylan the judges said it was for his "profound impact on popular culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power."
While I certainly appreciate Dylan's genius and ability to turn a phrase, I would be lying if I didn't say that some of his lyrics don't necessarily live up to the lofty heights spoken of by the Pulitzer people.
It is with that in mind that I present this quiz.
THE OUT OF CONTEXT BOB DYLAN POETIC POWER QUIZ
Three of these lines are from Dylan songs. The other three I made up. Can you tell which is which? Answers at the bottom. No peeking.
1. The beggars and the choosers all look the same to me.
2. And he just smoked my eyelids and punched my cigarette.
3. You never turned around the frowns on the jugglers and the clowns.
4. The old man stands in the window well. Does he have shoes? It's hard to tell.
5. Ties that bind and eyes that lie, I don't mind the eggs they fry.
6. I got 40 red, white and blue shoe strings, and a thousand telephones that don't ring.
2,3,6 are real. 2-Stuck inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again, 3-Like A Rolling Stone, 6-Highway 61 Revisited |
