April 17, 2008 gas and stuff

$3.47.9! THREE DOLLARS AND FORTY SEVEN POINT NINE CENTS A GALLON.
This is not good.
I remember back in 1979 (yes, I’m that old) during the first “energy crisis”. I was moving from Oklahoma City to Seattle and driving the U Haul towing the car. (Well, Dave was driving, but you know what I mean). I remember being totally outraged that gas prices were .85cents a gallon. I was so peeved I wrote a very nasty letter to Mobil Oil Co and told them exactly why I was refusing to pay my bill.
I don’t exactly remember the end result, other than I never had a Mobil Credit card ever again.
So the gas prices got me to thinking about my daily commute from Monona to the Far West Side, and I came to a grim conclusion. I am going to have to move to the…west side!!!!
I know you are saying, what’s the big deal, but I remember Madison back when West Towne was last major business district heading out of town. I remember when it was the “politically correct East Side” and the “Fashionable West Side”. Left over values from the early days when the University dominated the west and the blue collar workers the east.
I am an East Sider. Always have been and thought I always would.  And now I will be a West Sider as my part of a smaller carbon footprint. I hope my friends will understand.

But what a pretty carbon footprint it is!
Even the thought of moving can place us outside our comfort zone. So the idea is to focus on the positive outcomes, like walking or biking to work. Atta boy, girl!

I don't blame you
I used to drive a Grand Prix with a super charger. It took super unleaded. Gas was killing me! Needless to say I drive a far more efficient car. I cried when I traded that car. I loved it! My pocket book it much happier for it.

smart move
way to go gabby. it's the only way to combat these insane oil prices...or maybe someone like obama in the white house would be a great start!!

How 'bout the bus??
I know it would take longer to get to work, but how about riding the bus. Have your cake & eat it too (or listen to Jonathan & Kitty's iPod - wouldn't THAT make the trip seem long??? ;-p
