I mentioned the other day that I had ridden the Ironman course on a windy Sunday morning recently. Riding, what seemed like, mostly into the wind. Well the other day after work I headed out in that direction again. Riding out Mineral Point Road until I hit the course, which I then rode backwards (abackwards loop, not actually riding backwards) for a while before heading home. The ride out Mineral Point Road was INSANE. The wind was blowing from left to right across the road and nearly knocked me off the road or off my bike more than a few times. I tried steering a little into the wind, but then on the rare occasions that the wind let up for a couple seconds, I would be steering into traffic. Then, finally, I took a right hand turn and the wind was now at my back, I was flying! There where hills that on Sunday I had to pedal to get DOWN, that I was now riding UP at 25 mph. I was afraid to look down at my bike computer when I was going downhill so I have no idea of how fast I was actually going. What a difference a few degrees in temperature and a little difference in wind direction can make.
Hi - I'm the Ironman bodymarking captain & I've heard more than one participant say that IM-WI has the hardest bike course of all of the IMs. I hope to see you on race day! I'k keeping my fingers crossed for race day weather like we had last year. It was the best race day weather of any of the IM-WI races. See you in September!
