Feb. 17, 2008: My biggest challenge yet.
|
O.K., I may be over-stating that. It may not have been my biggest challenge, but it was definitely one of the strangest.
A few weeks back I was told about a Triathlon team (Team EvoTri) that was looking for three new members. Step one in applying to be a member of the team- shoot a video, explaing why you should be a part of the team. What do you have to offer to the team? What do you have to offer to the endurance/triathlon community?
After much brainstorming and writing and rewriting scripts with Laura, I got together with John Urban to cut the video. So the idea of the video was that I would be riding my bike, on my trainer explaining why I should be a part of the team, explaining what I had to offer to the endurance/triathlon community. The catch would be that I would be riding outside. In the middle of all of this snow. In the cold.
So, John and I got together on Friday afternoon -- when it was 5 degrees. John had the bright idea to set up and shoot in the middle of the road. Of course to be extra goofy, I would be wearing cycling shorts and a short sleeve jersey. In the 5 degree weather!
Now, I swear on the way to the shoot I could make it through 3/4 of the script with no problem. But in the cold, with the camera rolling, I could barely make it through one line. And while I was trying to make it through about 2 minutes worth of script, in the cold, John was trying to run the camera -- again, in the cold, with freezing fingers. I don't know if you've ever tried to run a camera in the cold, but it aint' easy. At some points the camera doesn't work, and when the camera is working properly, your hands aren't. And when both are, the talent isn't. The "talent" being me.
We finally finished shooting -- about 15 minutes worth of video for a final project of less than 2 minutes. Now it's time to edit. We spent the rest of the afternoon editing the project and finally ended up with a pretty cool video. Now it's time to upload the video to YouTube. Guess what. Neither of us knows how to upload a video to YouTube. Deadline is fast approaching. A quick call to Emily (Triple M's web-master) and I think we have a solution. Emily will be at work for another 45 minutes, just bring the video back to the station and she'll upload it. No problem...
...until I hit the traffic jam on the way back to the station. I made it with 5 minutes to spare. Emily got the video uploaded, but in the process made it "private," and of course I gave her the wrong title for the video (the application process had very specific instructions for naming the video). I didn't realize those two things until later that night. So, a late night call to Emily and we finally got everything posted properly, with the proper title. And now I wait. And you wait too. One way or another you can see the video on Monday. Either I will link you to the Team EvoTri site where you can watch the top 10 videos and vote for your favorite (ME! Please!) or, if I don't make the top 10, I'll just link you to the video on YouTube, so you can still see all my hard work.
Tune in tomorrow! |
