Jan. 10, 2008: Why Ironman? Why not?

Actually, I started thinking about that the other day...Why Ironman.  I mean, there's any number of challenges I could have taken on, so why Ironman?  There's the obvious - it's a HUGE challenge.  It's climbing Mt. Everest.  But as I thought about it, I realized that's not the only attraction.  In what other sport does a comlete amature get to play with the pros?  I'm never going to suit up and go against Brett Favre.  I don't expect to play soccer with Thierry Henry.  I'll never inject steroids with McGwire.  But in the Ironman, I'm right there with the pros.  No, I don't expect to actually COMPETE with the pros, but I'm in the same game.  Running the same course.  At the same time.  Not in the same time, mind you, but at the same time.  It's not like they run one day and I'll run the next, we're all part of the same race.  Add to that, there's pro atheletes from other sports who take on the same challenge.  Former Wisconsin Badger and New York Jets football player Al Toon did it a couple a years ago.  So, right now, I'm at the same place as he was a couple years back - training to do exactly the same thing that he was training for.  I'll never go pro, but this is my one chance to play with the pros - football players, hockey players, baseball players, poker players (hey, they're on ESPN) and professional triathletes!
