Jan. 16, 2008: Celebrating Little Victories!
|
I got to thinking about this on a long run the other day. I've really had some pretty cool victories to celebrate over the last couple of months, while training for Ironman. Am I ready for Ironman yet? No, probably not, but here's a couple of little victories that I am celebrating...
1) I can run and talk. Doesn't sound like much, but a few months ago when I started training, I would go out on a two mile run and I would have to stop and stretch and rest a bit at about the 1 mile mark. On one of those runs, while I was stretching at the half-way point, a group of runners went by. They were all talking and joking and having a great time. I wondered when I would be able to run like that. You know, go for a run and have enough energy to carry on a conversation. Well, I can do that now. I can fairly comfortably run 10 miles and carry on a conversation with other runners. In fact I now find it easier to run with other people- the converstation takes my mind off the boredom of putting one foot in front of the other...over and over and over again.
2) I can almost swim. I know "almost" swimming won't get it done in the actual race, but I had a lesson on Monday night and really hadn't made as much progress as I hoped. There were two particular things that I wasn't doing correctly. I won't bore you with the details, but I was getting pretty frustrated. So, this morning when I went for a swim, I focused entirely on the first of those two things and I think I really worked through it. 45 minutes straight, doing nothing but one exercise is all it took, but I think I finally worked through it. I'll swim again on Friday morning and try to work through the other and then we'll see where I'm at. |
