Looking for a way to get through the boredom of running, a few months ago I came up with what I call the "10 song shuffle run." Basically, I set my I-pod to shuffle and then run through the first 10 songs that play. (In all honesty, ten songs isn't enough for the training that I'm now doing, so I actually listen to more than 10 on my run, but only keep track of the first ten.)
1) Jim Carroll- Catholic Boy. I think I told you about this guy once before. Poet, Musician. Junkie. "Catholic Boy" was the title song to what I believe was his first albu.
2) Angel City- Marseilles. Wow, I havent' heard these guys in like 20 years! The story I remember is that they were called "Angel" but there was an American band called "Angel" at the same time, so when they tried to break it big in America, they changed their name to "Angel City." I think they were from Australia, but don't quote me on that.
It's amazing what you can find on YouTube (not much of a video, but at least you can hear the song)...
3) The Doors- The WASP (Texas Radio & The Big Beat). I'm not a big Doors fan, but I have always loved this song.
4) Chris Isaak- Solitary Man. I am a big Chris Isaak fan and I like Neil Diamond, so one covering the other is pretty cool. I became a fan of Chris Isaak when he had a regualr show on Showtime. It was just called "The Chris Isaak Show," if you get a chance to see it, do check it out. And ask me sometime about the time Chris caught me and Jacob Dylan with a controlled substance (that's all I can say here).
5) The Tragically Hip- New Orleans is Sinking. LOVE this song! I'm headed to New Orleans next month for the Mardi Gras Marathon. This will be my first marathon. I picked New Orleans for 2 reasons- 1) No hills. I don't know if you ever noticed, but there are no hills in New Orleans. No, that's wrong, there is one hill in the New Orleans Zoo. The Hill in the zoo was built so the kids in New Orleans could experience a hill and they seem to love it. 2) I gotta beleive the party after the Mardi Gras Marathon will be a lot of fun.
6) The Beatles- Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds. Gotta have a Beatles song or two on the I-pod. I had trouble narrowing it down to just a few.
7) Roxy Music- More Than This. Hey, did you hear? Roxy Music is back together. The original line-up with a new album coming out this year!
8) Off Broadway- Stay In Time. A little slice of midwestern Power-Pop. I first discovered these guys when they opened a show for Cheap Trick at the Coliseum (1979 or 80). I saw them a couple of years later opening for The Beach Boys at the coliseum. I remember during that Beach Boys show, the guitarist flicked a pick into the audience and nobody reacted at all, the pick harmlessly fell to the ground. So, the gutarist steps up to the mic and says "I seemed to have lost my pick, has anybody seen my pick?"
9) Juian Cope- World Shut Your Mouth. One of my wife's favorites. I remember several years ago Julian Cope was playing in Milwaukee. I couldn't go to the show. Laura really wanted to go, so her mom (in her 70's at the time) said she would go with Laura. In the end Laura decided a Julian Cope concert was no place for a 70-something woman, so both of them skipped the show.
10) Johnny Rzeznik- All I Want Is You. Yes, the U2 song redone by Johnny Rzeznik. I don't remember where this came from, but it's a pretty cool version of the song, although not much different from the original.
And I finished up my run this morning to Marvin Gaye, Bruce Cockburn, a couple Cheap Trick songs (of course) David Bowie (another favorite of Laura's) and Everlast (ya can't beat a Irish rapper from Boston).
