July 31, 2008 The last time you were carded

So the governor of Washington State, a 61 year old woman, just laughed it off when she forgot her ID and they wouldn't let her into a bar. Reminds me of the days when I used to get carded regularly..

When I was first of legal drinking age...18 in those days..I got carded all the time. That's because I looked like I was about 14. It didn't really bother me, because I always carried my Wisconsin ID in the back pocket of my jeans. (That was back when Wisconsin drivers' licenses didn't have pictures!  Are you old enough to remember that?)

As you go through life, your reaction to getting carded goes through several phases.

Phase 1:  You are not old enough to legally drink. Getting carded either creates panic, or a line something like this.."I don't have it with me...uh...I must have left it in my other pants...my other coat...or in the car."

Phase 2:  You have just attained the hallowed age of 21 (or in my day, 18). You are happy to show the clerk or bartender your ID because you are so proud that you are no longer trying to scam the system.  This phase does not last very long.

Phase 3: You have been old enough to drink for around a year. The novelty of showing off your ID has worn off. You show your card, but you're a little disgusted.

Phase 4:  From around age 24-30, you're pretty unaffected by the whole ID thing. It's just routine.

Phase 5:  You're over 30, and you feel REALLY good about yourself that some one thinks you're under 21. You leave a big tip.

Phase 6:  You're over 40, and you know damn well that kid doesn't think you're under 21. Either he or she's just gunning for a big tip, or has a real hard-a** for a boss that requires every one to be carded.

Phase 7:  Carding has no impact. You're over 50, and you never go anywhere.  (You know I kid because I love).

My last time...
The last time I was legitimately carded was exactly 1 week before my 40th birthday! Pat Gallagher

My last time . . .
was 2 days before my 45th birthday. I asked the bartender if everyone got carded before I showed her my ID. She replied no. Funny thing, the 25 yo co-worker I was with did not get carded. Terry

Last time I got carded..
She refused to serve me. She told me there was no way the person in the picture was me. The funny thing was that I was just buying soda, I was the designated driver.
