I'm trying to maintain a positive attitude, but I'm just about ready to lose it. Winter has pushed me to the brink..and I am losing my ability to cope.
I heard that on yesterday's date last year the high temperature in Madison was 79 degrees. That's right . 79. I wonder what that feels like?
I don't know how long it's been since I've worn a short-sleeve shirt. They're waiting for me in boxes. As are my shorts and tennis shoes. They may be waiting patiently, but my patience has flown the coop. Probably to Bora Bora.
Meanwhile, I still have to look at my ugly winter coat (I never liked it much in the first place, but it was on sale, REALLY cheap). My sweaters are looking all too familiar. And my shoes are so stained with salt they've actually changed colors! I'm afraid small animals will start licking them soon to get some sodium in their diets.
This reminds me of a scarring childhood memory. (Of course it does). I was in 3rd grade and my family didn't have a lot of money. I only had two pairs of winter pants, and my mom didn't want to buy or make any new ones for me because I would likely grow out of them by the next season.
So day after day, week after week, I wore the same two pairs of pants to school. And they were both made of velvet, and of similar colors. I can close my eyes and see them. One pair was a bluish green, and the other pair was more of an avocado green color (likely to match our trendy stove and refrigerator.) By the time winter was over the velvet had almost all come off.
I guess I should be happy I now can afford more than two pairs of pants...and that my growth spurt has come to an end.
For some reason, those old sweaters are starting to look a whole lot better. At least they're not green velvet.
July 31, 2008 The last time you were carded So the governor of Washington State, a 61 year old woman, just laughed it off when she forgot her ID and they wouldn't let her into a bar. Reminds me of the days when I used to get carded regularly..
