Mar. 31, 2008: How far would you go for a tasty brew?
|
If you're a fan of micro-brewed beer, I've got another place for you to check out. The next time you're headed up north, make a pit stop in Wausau.
Mike and I had a chance to sample the beers at the Bull Falls Brewery, that just opened at the end of last year. Their tasting room was open from 4pm until 10pm on Saturday, so we stopped in at around 8:30. The building is fairly non-descript, and the interior is quite simple--but those certainly aren't adjectives I would use to describe the beer! The first one we tried was a nut brown, which was absolutely delicious! I asked Mike to help me with some of the adjectives, because all I can usually come up with is "yum!" It was caramelly, full of roasted malts, and not bitter at all..with a real smooth character. Mike tried an oatmeal stout, which was a robust, hearty coffee stout. I also tried the Five Star Ale, which was sweet and fruity with a slight hop finish..maybe a bit too sweet for me, but it's one of their most popular brews.
I had a nice time chatting with Sam the bartender, even though he admitted he's a Bears fan (!) He was impressed that I knew that Bloomer, Wisconsin, is the jump rope capital of the world. And Mike, the brewer and owner, was there too. He told us they plan to be open on Sundays when football season starts, and hope to be serving food by then as well. For right now you'll have to be content with the complimentary peanuts.
The place is smoke-free, even though it doesn't have to be. The owner says he feels that gives him a competitive advantage.
They don't have a website yet..but here's the basic info:
