Mar. 31, 2008: Play Ball!

Baseball is back!

I know a lot of you think the game is boring.  One of the big complaints I hear is that it seems to take forever for something to happen.  However, if you're a baseball fan you know that's what makes the game great.  A batter fouling off 10 or 11 pitches in a row isn't boring it is intense.

One of the things I love most about the game is that there is no clock.  Think about it. How many times have you turned on a basketball game or football game and one team is down by 20 points with about five minutes left?  You really don't need to see the rest of the game because it is truly over.  In baseball you never know until the 27th out is made.  It's the only team sport where, as Yogi Berra said, "It aint over til' it's over."

I also love the individual stories about players.  This game can teach you some good life lessons.  A player makes an error out in the field in one inning, he must shake it off and try to turn it around as quickly as possible because another ball may be headed in his direction.  How many times have you screwed up something and then thought about it over and over again?  Just like the player, you need to shake it off and move on.

Also a player hitting a home run is great, but he can't ride on that one home run forever.  He's got to come up to bat again.  How many times have you achieved something great at work and then slowed down because of it?  Just like the player, you need to enjoy the home run, but know another at-bat is coming soon.
