March 28, 2008 : Back in the land of the living

Man... this flu was the worst! I sure hope you and your family managed to avoid it. Did I mention how much I love the people I work with? Everyone was great with filing in for me and giving me the time to get healthy.

This got me to thinking about health care in this country and how hard it is for people with no benefits or insurance to get by. I was able to call my doctor and get her  on the phone right away. My medical plan covered my prescription cough medicine and my job offers sick pay. I know others that are not as fortunate. A friend with no benefits also had the flu, a man who usually never gets  sick. He misses three days of work and returns to a pink slip.

A woman who works for a large discount store with headquarters in Arkansas gets hit by a semi truck and is in a wheelchair in a nursing home. Her husband sues and wins a large settlement. Her employer in turn sues HER to repay the money her medical benefits paid. Now they want every dollar she has.  Something is wrong here.

I don't have answers, only questions. I think we all need to ask questions. And deserve answers.

What are YOUR questions?

So true...
I work for a small company which cannot afford to offer benefits. It's not that feasible for many to just find work with employers who can afford to offer benefits. Sticky situation, to say the least
