May 12, 2008: Sorry, Burt Bacharach
|
Today may be your 80th birthday, but I'm still mad at you for something you did back in the early 1970's.
What am I mad about? I'll tell you in a second.
First a little music lesson: composer Burt Bacharach has a major impact on the "lite" side of music, and actually wrote a song the Beatles recorded ("Baby, it's You.) And Tom Jones purred his way into many hearts with his rendition of the Bacharach song "What's New Pussycat?" And who's not had that Dionne Warwick standard "Do you know the way to San Jose" stuck in their head at one time in their life?
My problem with Mr. Bacharach does not stem from any of that. (Although I must say his co-writing of the Neil Diamond hit "Heartlight" is at least some kind of minor sin.)
He almost ruined one of the best movies of all time. The Sting, starring Robert Redford and Paul Newman, in my opinion, one of best movies ever. Great acting, great story..great directing and great cinematography. But at one point early in the movie, it teetered on the precipice of downright ridiculousness. That's because for some reason they insert a MUSIC VIDEO in it! A video of that annoying song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head, written by Burt and sung by B.J. Thomas.
This bike riding movie montage had nothing to do with the movie. It wasn't even raining! It is only by virtue of that movie's greatness that it wasn't completely derailed.
Sorry Burt Bacharach, I know it's your birthday. But I just had to vent.
Just in case that scene isn't imprinted on your brain...here it is for your viewing pleasure. And I say that with just a hint of sarcasm.
