May 5, 2008: I almost miss getting calls from telemarketers
|
I'm on the state's no-call list for telemarketers, so I really don't get too many of those pesky, unwanted calls. That's why I was pretty surprised when I started getting some annoying messages on my answering machine..
They said "URGENT MESSAGE about your vehicle's extended warranty." Since neither my car or Mike's has an extended warranty, I had a pretty good idea that this was just a fishing expedition for my personal info and a chance to sell me something. I never called the toll free number on the message. But the other day I was home when they called, so I eagerly pressed "1" to talk to a real person about this fascinating opportunity.
First I asked them the name of the company. The operator told me it was Dealer Services. I asked them which car they were talking about..and they said they sent me a postcard (no they did not) which would have listed my vehicle identification number. I told them this sounded very interesting, and wanted to know a number to call back when I had more time to chat. That's when they hung up on me!
So I called the Department of Consumer protection to lodge a formal complaint for a violation of the no-call list, where I was told they've already gotten quite a few complaints about this company.
I know it's just a very small thing, but it made me feel powerful..that maybe a little person like me could have an effect on some shady company!
That little encounter made me realize something...I almost miss the opportunity to talk with telemarketers and the chance to waste their time!
Note: I said almost.
