Madcity Flashback: 60s & 70s

On Dec 10, 1967: Otis Redding was on his way to Madison for a show. His plane tragically crashed into Lake Monona. Rumor has it that Otis always traveled with a suitcase of money, which was never recovered. The Madcity Music Guide was a publication at that time.
The poster from the show.
Dec 10, 1977: Neil Diamond @ the Coliseum for 10 bucks?!

Sept. 26, 1979: KISS @ the Coliseum. Remember that show?
June 24, 1977: Elvis played a concert at the Coliseum on his last tour. On the way to the airport after the show,  he saw two men fighting... he made the limo stop, and he broke up the fight. He apparently was still wearing his blue jumpsuit from the show when he broke up the fight at the Skylane Gas Station on E. Wash and Stoughton. The show happened less than two months before he died
Headliners was a great club back in the day...check out this week's lineup, featuring little artsists such as George Thorogood, Leon Russell and local faves The Britins!
Imagine seeing Cheap Trick, at the Y...for 2 bucks?!

Those were the days...
I camped out at the coliseum for three days to buy Elvis tickets to that show. Got 10 seats in the center section, second row. I don't remember the price off hand but I think they were around $15. Use to see great shows at the coliseum, I was at the Neil Diamond show, took my then boyfriend to see Blood Sweat and Tears for $5.95 a seat (I admit they were nosebleed, but hey, I was young). Saw Grand Funk Railroad, Chicago, and on and on and on. My biggest regret? I didn't see the Doors. It amazes me how much artists charge now for seats; it's too bad really cause I think it keeps a lot of folks out. I know I think twice before I buy these days and I never used to. Anyway, those were the days, Madison was a great place to be. And it was a great time to be young. Drugs, sex and alcohol - Rock On!

Days long gone
my 1st concerts were 3 Dog Night & 10 Years After. I saw the Grateful Dead several times for $10. They would play for 3-4 hrs w/ just a small break! Seating was festival style & there was a always a "cloud" over the crowd. These were at the Coliseum. I saw Crosby, Stills, Nash& Young together & separately in their various groups. One very memorable concert had as a 1st opening band Dr Bop & the Headliners featuring the White Raven, The Eagles (their 1st tour) & Black Oak Arkansas. What a dynamite time!!!! This is the band that Ruby Starr would become associated with in later years. Other groups I saw: Heart, Chicago, James Taylor, REO Speedwagon (I was driving their charter van to & from the Sheraton & got to see the concert, go back stage & get autographs). I've seen wonderful concerts at most of the local bars and Alpine Valley. Prices were very reasonable. I can't afford to see live music anymore except in bars. Those days are really long gone.
