Jonathan & Kitty's Lost Musical Establishments Tour
In celebration of Madison Day on May 15, Jonathan and Kitty took a trip down memory lane--literally--to celebrate all the great history of Madison's music scene. Join us on an entertaining (and of course educational) tour of Madison's musical past. The hilarity ensues below.

Mayor's Proclamation
To make it official...here's the proclamation from Mayor Dave (click for larger image)

Madcity Flashback
The 60s & 70s
We've put together a very abbreviated version of some important events that happened in Madison during the 60s and 70s, including the death of Otis Redding, the time Elvis stopped a fight after the show, and more...
The 80s
Were you one of the lucky few who made it out to see Van Halen on their first tour at the Shuffle Inn? Later that night was the infamous party when they destroyed the seventh floor of the Sheraton! Read more here
The 90s to Now
Were you there when Kurt Cobain opened for the Tragically Hip @ O'Cayz Corral for about 40 people? Remember when the Badgers won the Rosebowl?...read more here
Club de Wash
The Hotel Washington was located on West Washington Avenue, adjacent to the Milwaukee Road railroad depot.   It had been home to Rod's Club; Club de Wash, a music venue; Barber's Closet (and Salon), Cafe Palms, and others.

Memories are keeping the spirit of Club de Wash alive, even after a fire leveled the popular Madison music venue Sunday morning...click for more
O'Cayz Corral
Once upon a time in Madison at a place called O’Cayz Corral, local bands shared the stage with the likes of Nirvana, The White Stripes and Soundgarden.

The O’Cayz Corral caught fire early in the morning Jan. 1, 2001. The fire traveled from a bar next door, and it burned O’Cayz to the ground...click for more
Unique to Triple M :: Unique to Madison :: Live From Studio M
In honor of Madison Day May 15, we're celebrating all the wonderful music made here in Madison!

Since it’s inception in 1994
, hundreds of artists have played acoustic, semi-acoustic and downright electric sets in Studio M.  The studio itself started as a little commercial production studio with 3 microphones – one for the host and two for the band (imagine Lyle Lovett’s Large Band or Sonia Dada crowded around 2 mics!?!?).

Today, Studio M is a beautiful performance space, with a small stage, seating for about 40 people and full digital production facilities.  In the early days of Studio M, just like today, Madison artists have been and continue to be a big part of what we do in Studio M.

Here’s a sampling of Madison artists who have played in Studio M over the years…
Listen to Lucas Cates

TLCB is native to Madison, WI. Signed to Indie label, PopBomb Records in 2005, TLCB has one album already out in stores and on Itunes. With recent spins at 105.5 and college radio around the country, they are on their way to sharing their music with a much larger audience. With apperances on Good Day Atlanta, Good Morning Memphis and future tours, TLCB is establishing itself as a National act. Keep an eye out for their new album slated for release this summer.
  Listen to Mike Massey

Michael Massey is a singer, songwriter, pianist, producer who has written or collaborated on over 250 rock & pop songs. He has won a dozen ADDY awards for excellence in original music for advertising. For more than two decades Michael toured the U.S. and Canada as frontman, singer/pianist in rock/pop bands such as Chaser and Boys In White playing venues ranging from small nightclubs to 10,000 seat arenas . He has performed on numerous television productions including Star Search.
  Listen to Matt White

i learned how to play the piano when i was a child, but was forced to learn to play the guitar when i went away to college at the university of wisconsin, because i couldn't fit a piano into my dorm room. i've since then traveled around this great country playing shows for anyone who would listen. i have found playing live for people to be my true love in life. there is something explosive that happens on stage that can't be put on an album.
  Listen to Clear Blue Betty

Clear Blue Betty emerged in 2002 out of the highly respected Madison music scene and has quickly risen through the ranks to become a Wisconsin-music powerhouse. Their freshman release, Never Been a Rebel, earned them the 2005 Madison Area Music Award (MAMA) for Best Rock Album. Not to be outdone, their 2006 sophomore disc, Write Your Name in the Sky, also won the 2007 MAMA for Best Rock Album. It was released to a sold-out crowd at Madison's Majestic Theater and has already been described as "a giant step forward ... putting Clear Blue Betty in the running as one of Madison's hottest groups" (Rick's Cafe, May 06).
  Listen to Marques Bovre

In the spring of 2006, in a very fortunate re-shuffling of musicians, SoDangYang began to take form. Our first CD New Guitar has been completed by the elves at the CD factory, and is availble now for $10 - just e-mail me at beeovary@chorus.net and I'll take care of your order. ~ Marques

Song samples and more information about SoDangYang can be found by visiting them at MySpace.
  Listen to The Rousers

Formed in 1984, The Rousers have been rocking for over 20 years. After one vinyl E.P. and two CD's the band is still rockin'. Playing road house style roots rock that gets you jumpin' is the way they like it. Turn it up!!
  Listen to Free Hot Lunch

Free Hot Lunch were one of the zaniest trios to step onto a folk festival stage. Although they were capable of singing serious-minded tunes, including "Home of the Whales" and a harmonious rendition of John Sebastian's "Lovin' You," the group were more at home with tongue-in-jowl, Jimmy Buffett-meets-the Beach Boys ditties, including "Sex in a Volcano," "Sex By Mail" and "Sidewalks on Parade." They joked about a hangover during "I Hate to Wake Up in Nebraska" and wondered how penguins kissed during the title track of their debut album, Penguin Love. Never mind that they were half a continent away from the ocean.
  Listen to Cash Box Kings

The Cash Box Kings are an up and coming blues band dedicated to carrying on the spirit of the 1940s and 1950s post-war blues sound. The group rounds off their musical offerings with a healthy dose of original music that captures the Memphis and Chicago blues sounds of the 40s and 50s.
  Listen to Peter Leidy

In his other life, Peter is a singer, songwriter, and award-winning commentator on life in Wisconsin. His humorous (some say "skewed") observations involve politics, Wisconsin culture, the Madison scene, and personalized songs for individuals and special events.
  Listen to Harmonious Wail

The style in question is gypsy swing, introduced in the 1930s. The Wail play this infectiously joyful music, as well as jazz of other styles, on bass, guitar, ukelel, mandolin, and the oddest assortment of percussions you've ever seen. Even more than by its unique instrumentation, though, the group is distinguished by the jaw-dropping musicality of lead vocalist Maggie Delaney-Potthoff.
  Listen to Sean Michael Dargan

...like Lyle Lovett and Elvis Costello playing scrabble with Aimee Mann at a Gin Blossoms show.

Needtobreathe

Atlantic recording group NEEDTOBREATHE makes a powerful homecoming with their eagerly anticipated second album, “THE HEAT”...the record sees the South Carolina-based rock outfit digging into their down-home roots to create a remarkably passionate and personal new collection. NEEDTOBREATHE blazes a new musical trail, revealing not just the depth of its spirit, but the far reaches of its soul.

Raised up in Possum Kingdom, South Carolina, the sons of an Assembly of God pastor, brothers Bear and Bo Rinehart developed an early enthusiasm for music, learning piano from their mom, then moving on to guitar in their teens. After graduation, Bear and Bo returned home to Seneca, South Carolina and, with drummer Joe Stillwell and bassist Seth Bolt completing the quartet, devoted their considerable energies to NEEDTOBREATHE. The band’s expressive songwriting and aggressive regional touring saw an ardent fan following – known as “the Breathers” – rise up around the band in ever-increasing numbers.
