recycle your cell phone; save a gorilla

Do you have an old cell phone that you're not using any more? Whatever you do, don't throw it in the trash! The Environmental Protection Agency estimates 130-million cell phones will go out of service this year, creating 65-thousand tons of garbage!

Health hazards
That would be bad enough if it were nice harmless garbage--but unfortunately that's not the case. Cell phones contain lots of hazardous substances known as Persistent Bioaccumulative and Toxic chemicals, known as BPT's. They can cause damage to the nervous system, as well as reproductive and development problems, cancer and genetic impacts.

And that's just the impact on humans! Cell phones are coated with an ore called Coltan, which is found in the Congo in the middle of endangered gorilla and elephant habitat. According to the United Nations, because of the mining and habitat destruction,  the population of eastern lowland gorillas and forest elephants continues to decline and head toward extinction.

Recycle your old phone!
Here in Madison, you can donate your old cell phone to the Henry Vilas Zoo, and help raise needed funds for the zoo, and help the environment at the same time. Drop off your old  cell phone at the main gift shop.  The phones will be refurbished and re-sold, donated to groups who give them to individuals who can use them for emergency calls, or recycled.  None will go into landfills.

Find out more about the zoo's cell phone recycling program here.

the myanmar cyclone: world impacts + how you can help
The humanitarian crisis in Myanmar in the wake of Tropical Cyclone Nargis could expand into other nations as part of the widening food crisis.
